Husband ❤️ tells me that we will be wintering up north this year, along the OR coastline … and even though we will be in the warmest environment of the PNW, it still gets cold up there in the early morning- and late evening hours 😒; so, I devised a double sole for this pair of slippers that will no doubt be called into use at some point, when the flip-flips are put away 😉
The knit slipper pattern is a free domain Drops Pattern and it works up real easy: and they are comfortable to wear - the crochet undersole is my design 😊, which is also a comfortable feel … as well as a necessity when the chill ocean winds blow in and settle over the PNW Coastline.
Materials: 1 skein Main Color Worsted weight yarn; small ball of Contrast Color yarn; #10 knitting needles; #K crochet hook; 2 markers; scissors, tapestry needle; cardboard foot form (trace around your foot shape)
GARTER ST (back and forth on needle): K all rows.
INCREASING TIP: Inc 1 st from RS by making 1 YO. Work Yo into back of loop on return row to avoid a hole.
--------------------
SLIPPER: Work back and forth on needle from the toe towards the heel.
With main color yarn, cast on 12-13-14 sts on needle size 6 mm/US 10, (leave approx. 30 c,/11-3/4 tail and use this to sew slipper tog afterwards).
Insert a marker in st 4 and a marker in st 9-10-11. Work stockinette st, AT SAME TIME inc 1 st on each side of both markers - SEE INCREASING TIP, and repeat the inc on every other row a total of 4 times = 28-29-30 sts.
When piece measures 9-10-11 cm/3-1/2 inches-4 inches-4-3/8 inches, work as follows: 7 garter sts, 14-15-16 stockinette st, 7 garter sts. Continue like this until piece measures 22-24-27 cm/8-3/4 inches-9-1/2inches-10-5/8 inches; bind off.
ASSEMBLY: Tighten slipper at the top and sew tog mid upper front inside 1/2 st to where the garter st begs. Sew tog mid back, edge to edge to avoid a chunky seam.
UNDERSOLE: Trace your foot form onto a cardboard box flap & trim neatly (no rough edges); slip the cardboard form into your slipper and fit slipper sole around it smoothly - neatly lining it up, toe to heel; trace the outline shown with your contrast color yarn - you will backfill this outline with crochet slip stitches to make your double-layer sole.
With your main color yarn and crochet hook, and looking at the shape you have outlined with the contrast color yarn: pull the yarn up through the inside of the slipper, and start working slip stitches at the shortest outlined edge, working in an up and down pattern (heel to toe & toe to heel) towards the opposite edge. This will take some time (and there will be several snips and start ups again); when you finish the last short length of slip stitches, cut yarn & begin to weave the loose ends in.
What a clever idea to make your knitted slippers more sturdy and cosy. They look great. Thanks for sharing with us at Handmade Monday :-)
