I have heard several {pastors} telling their congregants to avoid the mention of Hell while witnessing to sinners – chastising those of us who use the term ‘turn or burn’, and telling us that “people today do not want to hear that”: this really annoys me and makes me see red 😡
Sinners today may not ‘want to hear that’ … but that is because THAT is exactly WHAT they NEED to hear!
Yeshua (Jesus), Himself, often spoke of the realities of Hell WHILE HE MINISTERED TO SINNERS. In fact, Yeshua talked about Hell more than anyone else in the entire Scriptures. Yeshua spoke of Hell as a place of complete hopelessness, endless despair, and absolute loneliness. In Matthew 22:13, Yeshua describes Hells as “a place of darkness where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth”; and in Mark 9:43 as a place "where the fire never goes out".
Did He speak so vividly about Hell to scare people, or to ‘upset them’? No doubt … the realities of Hell SHOULD frighten the hell out of people.
But scaring the hell out of people was not the main reason Yeshua talked about the realities of Hell – He talked about Hell because He wanted people to know that Elohim (Father God) has provided a way of escape … and that escape can only be found in salvation through Yeshua, His holy Son.
So while the Gospel IS “good news” and “a message of love and peace”, to Believers, it IS ALSO a warning to unbelievers who are perishing, as well as to those who claim to be Christians but who are NOT following the TEACHING OF Yeshua Ha’Mashiach (Jesus Christ). The teachings of Yeshua spoke plainly of the realities of Hell – how can a Christian dare to do less? And why would a pastor refuse to do so, and encourage his congregants to shun that responsibility also? The answer is simple: they do not believe the Word of God, nor do they KNOW Him in whom they claim to love, honor, and obey.
Bottom line: don’t gamble your soul or the souls of those you witness to by shirking your responsibility to mention Hell to them as well as telling them of the joys of Heaven. If you refuse to tell them about the horrors of Hell, you may well end up there with them, separated from Elohim and Yeshua for all of eternity. And an answer for their fate will be required of you.
If you, yourself, are not aware of the teachings on Hell, acquaint yourself with the Scriptures and Yeshua’s ministry: HIS ENTIRE MINISTRY was about SAVING people FROM HELL.
And He did not avoid mentioning Hell’s realities in conjunction with the joys of Heaven.
