MOD SWEETPEA BOOK COVER~Crochet Pattern; Castle Rock-WA

MOD Sweetpea Book Cover

A couple years back, I'd bought some Reader's Digest hardbacks at a garage sale - which I plan on reading after I finish the Clive Cussler novels ... today, I'm making a cover for one of them; in a sweetpea design, along the spine edge.

Sweetpea Blossom

Materials: Worsted Yarn, in hues of Yellow (2 med-size balls), Green, Variegated pinks, & White; small amount of scrap yarn for a length of marker yarn; Sock Yarn, small amount in matching color (or contrast color if desired) #I-9 & #0 aluminum crochet hooks; scissors; tapestry needle; trim of choice (if trim is desired).

Terms used:

FR LP = front loop

BK LP = back loop

ch = chain

EA = each

EO = end off

rem'g = remaining

rpt = repeat

r = row

sc = single crochet

st = stitch

T = turn

x = repeat


Row 1: With 1 ball of yellow yarn & crochet hook, make a chain as follows: ch 8 Yellow, place marker, ch 15 Yellow - drop yellow: do not cut, & attach Green & ch 13; attach 2nd ball of Yellow & ch 15, place marker, ch 8 Yellow: ch 1 & T

Row 2: Sc across row as follows: Sc 8 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 15 Yellow, sc 13 Green, sc 15 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 8 Yellow: ch 1 & T

Row 3 (sweetpea row): Sc 8 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 15 Yellow; attach Variegated pinks & make 4 dc in FR LP of next st - then attach White & make 4 dc in BK LP of same st; sc 13 Green, sc 15 Yellow sts, move marker up row, sc 8 Yellow: ch 1 & T

Row 4 - Sc across row as follows: Sc 8 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 15 Yellow, 12 Green & 1 Green in st behind sweetpea dc's, sc 15 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 8 Yellow: ch 1 & T

Row 5 - Sc across row as follows: Sc 8 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 13 Yellow & hook first st of variegated petal & sc into next st (a.1, a.2.a & a.2.b, a.3), then sc next st (b); with Green - put hook through back post between variegated & white petals (b.1 & b.2) & sc 13 sts, sc 15 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 8 Yellow: ch 1 & T

Row 9 - Sc across row as follows: Sc 8 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 13 Yellow & hook first st of variegated petal & sc into next st, then sc next st; with Green - put hook through back post between variegated & white petals & sc 13 sts, sc 15 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 8 Yellow: ch 1 & T

Row 10 - Sc across row as follows: Sc 8 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 15 Yellow, sc 13 Green, sc 15 Yellow, move marker up row, sc 8 Yellow: ch 1 & T

Repeat rows 7 thru 10 for pattern.

Work in pattern for a length of 8"; EO

Finishing: With RS facing, fold 8 sts of the flap backward & whipstitch EA end closed - weave in loose ends. Turn flap inward to make a pocket to slip cover edge into. Rpt with other cover flap, in same manner.

Page Marker: With #0 hook & sock yarn; attach yarn in center top of Book Cover, & make a ch of chosen length - attach trim (or not) & back chain to beginning ch. EO and weave in loose ends.

Finished; MOD Book Cover will fit a 8-in L x 6-in W Hardback
