IN TIMES OF GRIEF; Castle Rock-WA

~Valeria Hargand

6 years ago * Facebook

I, myself did not understand Grief properly … until I went through it myself: no one truly can, until they go through it themselves.

When I first became a Widow, I told everyone I wanted to be left alone for a while. No doubt I hurt people's feelings when I said that, and meant it. But I NEEDED to be alone for a few weeks; I simply could not deal with anyone else at that particular time in my life. The loss of Bob's physical presence in my life was too much for my heart. mind, and soul. I NEEDED solitude. Total solitude - I didn't want my senses overwhelmed. I could not comfort others while I was barely holding myself in check. People who truly know me, KNEW that - those who didn't … didn't; and got their feelings hurt.

In those early weeks, while I walked through the shadows that sometimes obscured my new path in my new life, Safe People and Fellow Grievers came alongside me, to walk with me - the Safe People did not actually say anything to me: they just took my elbows and helped safely guide me through the shadows. I appreciate every one of them! They were SO crucial during those first months of Widowhood. Sometimes they called, said who they were, and just listened to me cry - sometime for quite a long time; they knew that was the only way I could truly heal. They WILL be blessed.

Then there were the Fellow Grievers; the ones who had already walked through the Shadows themselves and knew what I was facing/would be facing; they came alongside me too, and listened. Because I was now walking a path they had already walked, they knew that platitudes, unwanted advice, and Pollyannaism wasn't what I needed from them: they just extended their hand of friendship and let me lead as they walked alongside me. They did offer advice when I asked - but they never crossed that line without my expressed permission to give advice. They encouraged me from the sidelines and cheered for me when I cleared the hurdles: they knew I had to do this on my own … they were very careful to aide me, yet keep a prudent distance - they understood that my baby steps were similar to those of a toddler; hovering and/or stepping in would handicap my progress. So, they just waited for me to ask for their help and/or advice. They knew that if I was asking, I was in the mood to listen. They knew this was the only way I could truly move forward with confidence. They WILL be blessed.

I am thankful for the Safe People & the Fellow Grievers.

**********

Here are five important people you will meet in your grief journey.

THE HYPER-CRITICAL JUDGE

These people compare and evaluate. You’ll recognize their voice easily. “Be strong. Get over it. Pull yourself together. Move on.”

Hyper-critical judges don’t like tears. They pick you apart, bit by bit. They’re discouraging. They can kill your heart. They’re toxic. Avoid them like the plague.

If you must interact with them (family and co-workers, for example), put on your armor first. Don’t give them access to your heart. Quick to point out your faults, they ignore their own. They deal with your issues as a smokescreen to hide theirs.

When the hyper-critical judge shows up, breathe deeply, protect your heart, and let them pass on by.

THE WELL-MEANING RELATIVE, FRIEND, OR CO-WORKER

These folks want to help but don’t know how. Thinking they need to say something, they stammer out platitudes. “At least they’re not suffering anymore.” At least they’re in a better place.” “At least you had them as long as you did.” “At least…”

Chances are your life is well-populated with these well-meaning people. Keep your expectations low. They can’t understand. They’re trying, but they can’t get to where you are.

When they say unhelpful things, release them quickly. If you can, smile and forgive. Relate to them as you want to, but it’s probably wise not to entrust them with the tender parts of your soul right now.

THE FIXER

These people are convinced they know what you should do. They don’t enter your grief with you, but they’re full of ideas on how to fix it. “You need to get out more.” “This works, so you need to do it.” “Go to a support group.” “You need counseling.”

Fixers tell you what to do and then disappear, only to reappear later with more advice you haven’t asked for. They’ll share their self-styled, fix-it-quick wisdom anywhere – restaurants, movie theaters, grocery stores, hospitals, coffee shops, street corners, clothing stores, churches, sporting events, etc. Fixers are everywhere, and they have an answer for everything.

Some fixers have good hearts. Your pain distresses them. They don’t know how to meet you in your grief, so they pull out their magic wand to whisk the pain away. Be merciful and forgiving. There’s some fixer in all of us.

You don’t need fixers at present. If possible, don’t let their darts of advice penetrate too far.

THE SAFE PERSON

Safe people are amazing.

They meet you where you are. They enter your grief and exist with you there, even if it’s only for a few moments. They have no agenda other than supporting you.

They don’t try to fix. They don’t have magic-wand advice. They don’t pretend they didn’t see you in the store. They aren’t terrified by pain and suffering.

Safe people are great listeners. They know that words are overrated. They possess an ability to hear not only your words but your heart. Compassion exudes from them.

How do you find them? Be a safe person yourself. Safe people are magnets for each other.

THE FELLOW GRIEVER

Grief is lonely, but the road of loss is well traveled and densely populated.

Permeated with obstacles, this road winds, curves, climbs, falls, and often doubles-back on itself. Some are quite familiar with this terrain. They have traveled here often and know the emotions, challenges, and frustrations well.

These fellow travelers “get it.” They have allowed grief to cultivate compassion rather than bitterness. Capable of embracing and caring for your heart, they can be treasured companions on this precarious path.

Fellow grievers are around you right now – in support groups, online grief forums, and other venues frequented by those whose worlds have been altered by loss. Already on the grief journey, they can be wonderfully supportive.

PEOPLE WILL MAKE ALL THE DIFFERENCE

People will have a massive impact on you in times of loss.

Avoid hyper-critical judges who will only add to your pain.

Be aware of friends, relatives, or co-workers who mean well but can’t provide the support you need.

Watch out for fixers who won’t take your grief seriously.

Learn to recognize safe people and fellow grievers who can enter your pain and become hope-giving companions.

LIFE IS SHORT: LIVE IT

Holland slipped into bed around 3:15 A.M. this morning; and I was out of bed by 3:25 A.M.

I had been hovering between half-sleep & half-awake: I had been to fellowship yesterday, and Becky's sudden passing from this life to the next had  been touched on - my sleepy cobweb thoughts were tangled up with thinking about Becky's Bobby, and the grieving that is happening now, at their house in Seal River … and those wondering thoughts morphed into flashbacks of my Bob, when he was in the process of shedding his earth body at the OHSU Hospital, in Oregon.

So, I kissed Holland and said I was having flashbacks; and that I was going to get up for a while - drink a mug of hot cocoa, and still my thoughts.

Bob & I married in 1974. I'm thinking Becky & Bobby married in 1976. Bob & I had been to Longview, shopping, and our daughter Stacey was about 9 months old: we were browsing through the Bon Marche store on Commerce, when we saw Becky & Bobby and stopped to chat with them (I knew Becky & Bobby, and Bob had worked with Bobby off and on). They didn't have any children with them - so, either they had left the absent child with grandma, or they hadn't started a family yet. Anyway - long story short: they had been married nearly 50 years when the Grim Reaper with his sickle, appeared on their radar. Fifty years is a long time to share one's life with another; Bobby & Becky were joined at the hip like Bob & I. The grieving runs deeper. The process is harder to lay to rest.

While I was drinking my cocoa, and waiting for the Sandman to pay a visit, I did a bit of  scrolling through Blog Posts … when a May 16th posting from 4 years ago, came up. I read it; and smiled. My friends had been pestering me for months to start getting interested in men, again; they thought I should be dating, and couldn't understand why I wasn't interested in men, dating, or remarriage. They didn't understand - and I  couldn't put my feelings into words that they could grasp. But this is what I posted to my Blog later that evening, following fellowship in Rosburg: {{Sunday - May 16th, 2021: If Elohei prompts me to seek companionship in another marriage; I won’t argue the point – I never argue with Elohim; I may balk, and I may drag my feet … but I never argue. I’m not actively advertising, either. If, and that is a very big “if” things go that way, it will have to be a ‘God thing’ – divinely orchestrated; and will have to ‘rock my world’ just like Bob’s sudden presence in my life did in 1974 – and every second of every day for the 44 years he shared his life and love with me.}}

I smiled reading that posting, because a year later, a divinely orchestrated meet did happen 😳😉, my future husband's exact words to me while we dated were - "this is a God thing, Baby" 🤝, remarriage did take place 😘; and  my world was rocked 😍

Speaking of - the cocoa mug is empty, I'm feeling the Sandman's effects, and my world rocker is upstairs waiting for me to join him again. I can snuggle close to my big guy 👩‍❤️‍💋‍👨, safely close my eyes, and slip back into a relaxing, comforting 🛌; without reliving flashback memories.

Elohim is good 👍🕊️

He is good to me: and He has blessed me with a close companion 💞 that checks every box.

I am blessed 😇

Life is short, but thanks to Elohim's divine intervention in both Holland's life & mine - Life is good, again 💕

PEACE IN THE HOME; Ocean Park-WA

September 27th: My Swan Man is vigilant about getting us back to Arizona for the winter months, in a couple days; this morning, he got the oil in Betsy changed - but he had to drive to Longview to accomplish that … I opted to stay behind and clean house.

Independence's interior straightening & cleaning needed tended to; there hasn't been time to tend to all the nooks and crannies since we collected her from the repair shop in Vancouver, 2 weeks ago.

I claimed some 'me time'; and encouraged Holland to do the same.

Holland needed alone time to listen to his music, touch base with people he he misses, and just generally have space. He has a lot on his mind (travel concerns, as well as concern for me). I've not been feeling very well for the past week … he needs alone time space.

It was still inky black when he left the peninsula for the city.

While he was gone - I got Supper rockin'-n-rollin' (a Bean Soup), spent 3 hours taking care of business with Independence, gave ear to my recent favorite weirdo's on their podcast (there's good info being spoken, that gives me insight into my new husband), and worked on the preemie sleep sack I'm currently designing: we both had full days.

Supper, tonight ;-)I added veggies to the basic bean recipe on the package.
Everyone views 'fighting' differently …

While the soup cooked, and I listened to Chris and Peaches … I tidied the rooms, organized stuff (and found the crocheted Christmas Gift Bags Garland & the Mezuzah I thought had been lost ;-)), and worked on the little preemie sacque I'm knitting; and I also thought on how we are both working together on our future together.

(((YES!!))) I was happy to find this box!

There was a lot coming from that podcast, to digest and consider.

Holland is literally an answer to prayer: he completes my life as it is now, to the end of my life. He truly is a "God-send".

February 19th, 2022 'REFLECTION ~ Redeeming the Time' Post:
https://jeastofeden.blogspot.com/2022/02/shabbat-reflection-redeeming-time.html

My Swan Man allows me to relax - he considers my physical limitations, and pitches in to shoulder the bulk of tasks if necessary.

He gives me space - more than I need, actually.

These things were difficult for me to get used to in our first year of married life, because I wasn't used to either - my life before was kept very busy; but with new lines drawn concerning gender roles, I'm learning to relax - and enjoy alone time space (that doesn't involve widowing growth). In this marriage, I really don't have much to do, but simple domestic things like supper (I insist now, on doing the cooking), laundry, and easy house cleaning … Holland takes care of everything else (his gender lines are very specific about this).

I like being pampered and spoiled wife - but, I also like being a productive wife ;-)

September 6th, 2024 'MEET ME HALFWAY; Castle Rock-WA' Post:
https://roadgypsiesvalandholland.blogspot.com/2024/09/meet-me-halfway-castle-rock-wa.html

Throughout the eras, the swan metaphor was originally used as a compliment, meaning “one of a kind". Swans are a beautiful symbol of love and romance, the connection of two soulmates: mated swans remain faithful - even after the death of their mate; they are eternally connected.

In ancient paintings, the swan is associated with the autumn season and is one of five types of men: https://psycho-tests.com/blog/swan-description

In present-day England, according to the Cambridge Dictionary, the verb "swan” means "to travel", "move or behave in a relaxed way for pleasure" … generally without caring that others may feel annoyed. Swans symbolize self-esteem and security, a powerful energy to bring to mated partnerships.

Their deep connection to water reminds us to go with the flow in life and in our relationships.

In every way … and according to swan meanings … Holland fits the description of being a Swan Man: and I'm glad he is mine.

I'm glad Elohim was faithful, and that Holland finally found me ;-)

The Moody Blues - 'I Know You're Out There Somewhere' lyrics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zix9FC_GopE

And in sharing with each other (another major happenstance with Holland), Holland is learning how to relax about his Past, so it doesn't handicap his present, or future. I let go of past hurts decades ago - but Holland's past hurts are still raw because Redmill people on that branch of his familial tree continue to spin out outrageous, and slanderous lies; and sibling deaths are still fairly recent (Tami, around 2-3 years ago).

Add to that - the pressure (out of the blue musing) of feeling he was competing with a ghost.

There were a lot of emotional stuff happening our first year of married life & gypsy life travels.

But, we've worked through the hard stuff now, and pray we both stay healthy enough to get us from WA to AZ without any more delays.

HARD DAYS; Ocean Park-WA

Some days are just plain h.a.r.d. to get through.

And the gloominess that accompanies constant rainfall only makes hard days harder :-(

The rain made the day gloomier …

Stevie Ray Vaughn - 'Texas Flood':

While the sky cried, I busied myself.
A new ABB design; 'Fish Scale' pattern.

Between listening to rainfall, and working up my new angel baby blanket design … I answered phone calls and texts from a brother, and a sister, who sent me love via the airwaves ;-)

Elohim always lets me know He sees what is happening in my life.

He knows my heart - and judges it fairly.

He blesses me; and favors me with love that cushions the freefall I find myself experiencing again (physical death is not part of it this time, thank the Lord).

Grieving is hard - regardless of the grief-stricken situation and unwanted circumstances.

Elohim put a huge heart above Independence last evening … it was comforting to me.
